Databases Quickstart

This article is intended to get your feet wet with SpinUp Databases.

This should take less than 5 minutes to complete. The end goal will be to have a database instance online and ready for you to import or create your data.

Prerequisites

You’ll need to already have created a SpinUp account. If you haven’t created one yet, you can register for an account via our sign-up page.

Create your first database

  1. Log in to your SpinUp account.

  2. On the left navigation bar, click Databases.

  3. Click + CREATE at the top of the page.

  4. Enter the name of the database and select the appropriate region.

  5. Select an appropriate datastore for your new database. SpinUp recommends using the newest datastore your application is compatible with.

  6. Next, select the instance type. This determines whether you create a standalone instance, or an HA instance with built-in redundancy and automatic failover.

  7. Select the amount of RAM and number of vCPUs your new Database will be configured with. This can be changed later, but it requires downtime for standalone instances, or a failover for HA instances.

  8. Select the disk size your new Database will be configured with. Disk space can only increase later. Increasing your disk size does not incur downtime.

  9. Review the information listed in the Summary panel.

  10. After you have determined that the information is correct, click on SPINUP SINGLE INSTANCE or SPINUP HIGH AVAILABILITY GROUP as appropriate.

  11. In the Cloud Database Details page, status will show build during the building process. Note that if you are building an HA instance, there are multiple members that have to be built, so it will take a bit longer.

  12. After the Database has been built, the Status changes to green, and will show as active. If you built an HA instance, the individual members (source and any replicas) will be listed under INSTANCES towards the bottom of the details page.

  13. SpinUp recommends turning on Weekly Backups, available from the DETAILS page after your instance build has completed. Once you turn on backups, enter the Name, Day of Week, Hour, and Minute you would like your Weekly Backup to begin. Full backups will run on this day, weekly, with subsequent days receiving an incremental backup.

Add databases and users

  1. Navigate to the details page for your Database instance.

  2. Towards the bottom of the details page, choose DATABASES.

  3. Click ADD DATABASE.

  4. Enter the details for your new database. Click + ADD. The database you created becomes visible in the list after a brief moment.

  5. Click on ADD USER.

  6. Enter the details for your new user and select which databases to grant the user access to. SpinUp recommends utilizing a password generator or manager to create sophisticated passwords that are more resistant to cracking. Click + ADD. The user you created becomes visible in the list after a brief moment.
